The Redbank Range Tunnel aka The Mushroom Tunnel was opened in 1867 to take
the train line from Picton to Thirlmere.  It was used until 1919 then left
empty until WW2 when it was taken over by the Department of Air who used it
to store ammunition, mustard gas and bombs.
After the war it was purchased by Wollondilly Council.  First lease was to a
man who used it to grow mushrooms.  That's how it got the nickname of  The
Mushroom Tunnel.  He was there twenty years.  Now the lease or licence for
the site is to Liz Vincent Tours. (see Liz link below)

Back in 1916 local lady Emily Bollard took a shortcut through the tunnel and
unfortunately was killed by a train.  Participants have regularly seen the ghost of a woman in the tunnel and it's believed to be Emily.  Though there
have been other deaths there, it was a popular spot to commit suicide, none
of the deaths were children or teenage girls.

Our first visit was in the daytime so we could get a feel for the tunnel before adventuring on a night tour. Aided with camera, video recorder and torch. The two of us entered the tunnel. It was extremely dark and silent.
We caught some great photo's as you can see below.

After viewing this pic on the camera we went in search of what object gave off the light. We were thinking maybe a plastic bottle of some sort. We found nothing, so we are keeping this one open for suggestions.  Photo's taken on 29/05/2008.

We are looking forward to our night tour now date to be advised soon, keeping in mind Picton is very chilly this time of year.
